How to take tramadol?

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. Take this medicine with food if you have nausea. The dosage of this medicine will depend upon your medical condition and response to treatment.

The maximum recommended dosage for this medicine is 400 milligrams per day. For older people, the maximum dosage is 300 milligrams per day. Do not increase your dose, take medicine more often, or take it for a longer time than the prescribed duration.

Stopping this medicine suddenly may cause withdrawal, especially if you have used it for a long time or in high doses. The withdrawal symptoms include restlessness, mood changes, watering eyes, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, runny nose, muscle aches, or sudden behavioral changes.

This medicine can cause addiction, and the risk is higher in people who have drug or alcohol addiction.

Dosage for moderate to severe pain

Immediate-release tablets

Take 25 mg tablets every morning. You can increase the dose from 25 mg to 50 mg per day every 3 days up to 50-100 mg orally every 4-6 hours as needed. The maximum dosage should not exceed 400 mg per day.

Take 50 mg to 100 mg oral dose every 4-6 hours as needed for acute pain. The maximum dosage should not exceed 400 mg per day.

Extended-release tablets

The starting dose is 100 mg orally once daily. You can increase the dose by 100 mg/day every 5 days. The maximum dosage should not exceed 300 mg per day.

What to know before taking tramadol?

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Do not take tramadol if you have:

  • severe asthma or breathing problems such as sleep apnea, COPD
  • stomach or bowel obstruction
  • brain disorders such as a head injury, tumor, seizures
  • recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or narcotic medications
  • if you use certain antidepressants, muscle relaxants, opioids, or other medications

Avoid taking this drug if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Do not take MAO inhibitors such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, tranylcypromine while using this drug.

Tramadol is not for people younger than 12 years old. Do not give Ultram ER to anyone younger than 18 years old. Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • breathing problems such as sleep apnea, COPD
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
  • urination problems
  • problems with your gallbladder, pancreas, or thyroid
  • a stomach disorder
  • mental illness, or suicide attempt

Do not use this drug during pregnancy because it can make your baby dependent on the drug, causing life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the baby after it is born. Do not breastfeed while using tramadol.

It can pass into breastmilk, causing side effects such as severe drowsiness or slow breathing in the baby.

  • other drugs such as quinidine or rifampin

There are also other medicines that can affect the removal of tramadol from your body.

These drugs include quinidine, azole antifungals (such as itraconazole), HIV drugs (such as ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), rifamycins (such as rifampin), drugs used to treat seizures (such as carbamazepine), among others.

Avoid taking this drug if you have used an MAO inhibitor recently. This drug may cause serotonin syndrome if you are also taking other drugs that increase serotonin. Avoid consumption of alcohol while using this medication.

It may enhance the side effects of tramadol and increase the risk of seizures.
